12.1 Preface

Qualitative methods have become a key component of information science research. This unit introduces some background in qualitative studies, the difference between qualitative and quantitative studies, types of data collection methods in qualitative studies, different approaches to qualitative studies, methods of qualitative measurements, validity of qualitative outcomes, and finally, unobtrusive measures.

We anticipate that you will need about 5 hours (300 minutes) to complete this unit.

After completing Unit 12, you should be able to

  • apply qualitative methods.
  • compare qualitative and quantitative research methods.
