Study Guide

Unit 2: Sampling, Measurement, Reliability and Validity

This unit contains the following sections:

  • 2.1 Preface
  • 2.2 Learning Outcomes
  • 2.3 Sampling
  • 2.4 Measurements
  • 2.5 Reliability and Validity
  • 2.6 References

2.1 Preface

Sampling involves techniques for finding an appropriate representative sample from the population or dataset of interest. Measurement determines how values are assigned to outcomes of the experiment. Reliability refers to the consistency of measurements or the ability of a measuring tool to provide consistent measurements. Validity has two aspects: internal validity, which refers to the extent to which a causal relationship between the dependent and independent variables is demonstrated, and external validity, which refers to the extent to which an experimental result can be generalized to a larger setting. This unit discusses these four concepts in greater detail.

We anticipate that you will need about 7 hours (420 minutes) to complete this unit.

2.2 Learning Objectives

After completing Unit 2, you should be able to

  • define the sampling needs for a given research context.
  • compare measurement types, and discriminate between them.
  • create tests of reliability and validity.

2.3 Sampling

We estimate that this segment of Unit 2 should take about 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete.
