When you have completed this unit, you should be able to

  1. Discuss the importance of computers in our lives and the various uses they have in home life, business, and education.
  2. Define a computer and list the basic functions it performs.
  3. Identify the main stages and significant technologies in the evolution of electronic computers.
  4. Identify the components of a computer.
  5. Describe the basic role of software, and distinguish between system and application software.
  6. List and describe classes or types of computers.
  7. Discuss the role of networks, including the Internet.
  8. Describe the World Wide Web and how it is used.
  9. Discuss the benefits and risks associated with the growing dependence our society has on computer technology.
